A new Panchalan king
Lot 652
INDIA, Post-Mauryan (Panchala). Panchalas of Adhichhatra. Rajnyah Bhanumitra, circa 200 AD. 1/2 Karshapana (Bronze, 14 mm, 1.47 g). Humped bull standing left. Rev. RAJNYAH BHANUMI (in Brahmi); in upper left field, symbol of the Panchala dynasty. Mitchiner -. Pieper -. K. Singh: Two new Kings of Panchala, in: JONS 234 (2018), pp. 15-17. Extremely rare and of great interest. Very fine.

From a collection of coins from Central Asia.

Rajnyah Bhanumitra is a new king in the lineage of the Panchala kings, whose iconography and royal title Rajnyah prove that the Panchala coinage continued well into the Kushan era, thus arguing against a long numismatic interlude in northern India. It is also worth noting that this type is the only issue to depict an animal in the entire Panchala series.
